What’s the difference between Aspirin, Advil, Tylenol, and Ibuprofen?

John S asked:

I was wondering what the differences between these drugs are. The following would be nice in any responses:

-What illnesses are they intended to treat?

-What is the working drug that is present in them?

-What are the Side effects?

Also which one is the most effective for:

-headaches

-muscle pain

-migraines

Thanks!!!!

Advil is Ibuprofen. Aleve is another one you didn’t list. They are all for pain but different composition. All but Tylenol also are anti-inflammatories as well as pain relievers (NSAIDS). I don’t know side effects off the top of my head other than kidney and asthma related to Tylenol use. Different people respond to them differently. So what works great for one may not for another.

All of these are pain relievers and fever reducers.

Aspirin is also a blood thinner. Side-effects are stomach issues.

Ibuprofen and Advil are the same thing (Advil is a brand name for ibuprofen, ibuprofen is the drug in it). Side-effects are stomach issues, especially it can cause ulcers if taken too much.

Tylenol is acetametophen. Side-effects are that it could cause liver damage, especially if taken with alcohol.

I can’t really say which is the most effective for the things you’ve listed because it seems like different ones work better for different people. Ibuprofen/Advil works best for me for all of those. Ibuprofen does last a little bit longer (6 hours) than Tylenol (4 hours), but it’s sometimes helpful to be able to take the Tylenol more often (every 4 hours opposed to every 6). Aspirin should never be used in children.
